Product Description

JG manufactures the Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle for steering systems used in material-handling machinery. This right-hand steering knuckle combines a tapered wheel spindle, large bearing journals and fork-style mounting arms in one high-strength cast-steel component. Controlled casting integrity and accurate machining are essential because the part carries steering, wheel and impact loads during continuous equipment operation.

Product Overview

The Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle is made from drawing-controlled chromium-molybdenum cast steel and heat treated to QT2 mechanical-property requirements. Precision casting creates the complex load-bearing geometry, while subsequent machining produces the bearing seats, coaxial journals, pin bores, locating faces and M60×2 thread required for reliable assembly with the wheel hub and steering system.

Manufacturing Process

  1. Precision casting with controlled mould, pouring and solidification parameters
  2. Heat treatment to the specified QT2 condition
  3. Initial machining and preparation of ultrasonic test surfaces
  4. 100% ultrasonic inspection according to EN 12680-2 Level 2
  5. Precision machining of journals, bores, threads and datum faces
  6. CMM, bore gauge, micrometer and thread gauge inspection
  7. Masking of all precision functional surfaces
  8. Corrosion-resistant surface painting
  9. Final inspection, batch documentation and export packaging

Engineering Value: Hub and Steering Alignment

The main manufacturing challenge of the Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle is controlling the relationship between the long tapered spindle, bearing journals and fork mounting bores. Critical fits include Ø65g6, Ø95h6, Ø60j6, Ø85j6 and Ø40H7 features. Coaxiality requirements down to 0.02 mm and perpendicularity or runout requirements referenced to datum A demand rigid fixtures, stable heat treatment and finish-machining control.

UT and MT Level 2 Inspection

The Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle is ultrasonically inspected after initial machining, when the test surfaces provide reliable sound transmission. The approved process uses contact inspection with oil couplant, 2 MHz longitudinal-wave, twin-crystal and angle probes, and a Ø3 mm cross-drilled reference reflector. The complete casting is examined at 100% coverage according to EN 12680-2 Level 2 by qualified Level II or Level III personnel. Magnetic particle testing (MT) to Level 2 is also performed to verify surface and near-surface integrity in drawing-specified areas.

Casting Integrity and Restricted Repair Areas

Drawing-marked zones of the Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle have defined surface and internal defect acceptance levels. The specified restricted area does not permit welding, preventing unapproved repair from affecting a highly loaded transition. Surface quality, internal soundness, machining allowance and traceable disposition of any indication are controlled before the component proceeds to final machining and painting.

Mechanical Properties and Material Control

The material specification for the Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle controls carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, phosphorus and sulphur chemistry. QT2 mechanical requirements include a minimum 650 MPa yield strength, 830-980 MPa tensile strength, minimum 10% elongation and HB245-290 hardness. Test samples, heat numbers and material certificates provide batch traceability.

Quality Documents

  • EN 10204 material inspection certificate
  • Chemical composition report
  • Strict mechanical property report for every batch
  • Heat-treatment report
  • 100% ultrasonic test report to EN 12680-2 Level 2
  • Magnetic particle test (MT) Level 2 report
  • Dimensional and CMM inspection report
  • Hardness inspection record
  • Painting and final visual inspection record

Surface and Workmanship Requirements

Machined surfaces of the Cast Steel Material Handler Steering Knuckle must meet drawing roughness and fit requirements and remain free from burrs, sharp edges, cracks and harmful casting defects. Precision journals, bearing seats, bores, threads and datum faces are masked before painting so that corrosion protection does not affect assembly accuracy. Permanent traceability markings are applied according to the customer standard.

Applications

  • Material handlers
  • Heavy forklifts and warehouse vehicles
  • Container-handling equipment
  • Steering axle and wheel-hub assemblies
  • Custom heavy-equipment steering systems
