Dia. 0.5636-0.5638 inJG manufactures the 17-4PH precision ground saw extension shaft from solid stainless steel bar stock for reciprocating saw extension assemblies and other high-load linear motion systems. CNC turning, precision boring, heat treatment and finish grinding are combined to control the outside diameter, internal bore, surface finish and end features.
This 17-4PH precision ground saw extension shaft is engineered for applications where wear resistance, dimensional stability and repeatable sliding or rotating fit are essential. The finished component is heat treated to 40-45 HRC and all burrs and sharp edges are removed before final inspection.
The most demanding feature is the precision bore specified at 0.5636-0.5638 in, a total tolerance range of only 0.0002 in. JG establishes stable machining datums from bar stock, controls heat-treatment distortion and finishes critical diameters after hardening. This process helps maintain the relationship between the ground outside diameter and precision bore.
The outside diameter is specified at 1.235 +/- 0.005 in with a 16 µin Ra maximum surface finish. Precision grinding gives the 17-4PH precision ground saw extension shaft a consistent cylindrical surface for reliable fit and reduced wear. Two opposed relief features and controlled 45-degree chamfers are machined and deburred to protect mating parts during assembly.

Heat treatment can change straightness, roundness and bore size. For this 17-4PH precision ground saw extension shaft, machining allowance and process sequence are planned so critical surfaces can be finished after hardening. Grinding parameters are controlled to avoid heat checking, grinding burn and unwanted taper.
The thin-wall section and stepped internal geometry also require stable fixturing. JG uses controlled clamping and inspection between operations to reduce deformation. Bore size, outside diameter, roundness, runout and surface roughness are verified with calibrated measuring equipment.
Quality inspection for every precision ground shaft covers material identity, heat-treatment hardness, overall length, outside diameter, stepped bore dimensions, chamfers, opposed relief features and edge condition. The 0.5636-0.5638 in precision bore is checked with suitable high-resolution bore measurement equipment, while the 16 µin Ra ground surface is verified with a surface roughness tester.
Inspection reports, material certificates and hardness records can be supplied according to customer requirements. Each 17-4PH precision ground saw extension shaft is cleaned and visually inspected to confirm that the surface is free from burrs, sharp edges, contamination and handling damage.

JG combines bar-stock machining, CNC turning, precision boring, heat-treatment coordination and grinding in one controlled OEM program.
